"Of course not, that's why we live here. We shouldn't have to do that".

That was a common response from homeowners who had been burglarized in a small, beautiful town and asked - "were your doors locked?" But, in spite of the fact that I was there to investigate a burglary - that was still their response! Not surprising, in fact, it's the typical mindset of those who live in areas where crime isn't rampant and residents have been sheltered all their lives. They are: The Perfect Victims.

Criminals are smart. They go where they are least likley to be noticed. Where people are naive. Where people wouldn't know a threat if it was developing a foot in front of their face. Where people don't lock doors because, well, theres nothing to be concerned about.

Do you recall the story of the female professor in, I believe, Tennessee? She jogged, by herself, every single morning because it was a great neighborhood and, she never had any issues, threats, or concerns... until the lat time she went jogging by herself in the morning. That day was the last day of her life and it was a horrible, tortuous last day. The response from the community? You guessed it - "I never in a million years would've thought that would happen here!"

Here's the fact: Bad things happen everywhere. There is no one, or place, immune. If you go through life blind to this, and you are chosen as a victim, or your child is chosen as a victim, you cannot turn back the consequences.

You don't have to be paranoid. Just accept that there are threats out there and do the very simple things required to prevent victimization. And, if you won't do it for yourself, do it for your kids.
